CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Dexton sat angrily stewing in the middle of the empty, derelict building well into the night. He couldn’t help the nagging feeling that his plan was already slipping through his fingers. The minions had basically surrounded the two city blocks housing both the girl and Ethan. If a move was made by either of them before sunrise he would know it.

He had begun to realize this mission was going to call for the most drastic measures he’d ever employed. His normal methods were not going to work on this particular human. They certainly weren’t going to work on Ethan. Time had proven that repeatedly.

The fire of hatred in his spirit burned deep and long. The pain of it continued to sear his very soul. The only one who had never betrayed him was his dark unending master. For that he owed him his eternal allegiance. His minions were bound to him and he was bound to his master. He was a slave to the pain and fires of his wicked doings.

He looked down at the upper half of his body. It was covered in dark ink, so dark as though it had been burned into him, inch by inch, mission by mission. They were marks of his battles, marks of his victories, and reminders of his defeat. Eternal marks forever binding him to the darkness.

The golden warriors were allowed to choose their marks. Some of them had them, some did not. It was a choice in what manner they wanted to display their service and rank. For the dark one choice was not part of the plan. He controlled everything about his fallen angels.

Dex thought about how proudly Ethan kept his skin golden and unblemished. To him the glowing perfection of his unmarked skin was his way of pleasing the Lord. To Ethan it showed honor to the one he worshipped and served. Dexton spat on the ground at the thought. Honor. Honor was something only fools counted on. Honor wasn’t real. Believing in honor would only betray you in the end.

He was bitterly rehashing centuries of memories when the front door of the abandoned building swung open. No light peered in through so he knew the minions should be not returning. There they were though, Cronan leading them in one by one.

Dexton leapt from his chair, his wings whipping out from behind him. He soared across the vast room, stopping inches in front of Cronan. He leaned down, his forehead pressing hard against the base of Cronan’s horns.

“Why,” Dexton hissed loudly, “are you back?”

“Sir, we...” Cronan began, trembling in fear.

“Did I give you permission to leave your post before dawn?” Dexton bellowed, fire sparking from the tips of his wings.

“No, sir,” Cronan began, quivering in terror beneath Dexton’s heated gaze, “but...”

“I did,” another voice, a feminine, beguiling voice, a voice he had not heard in a millennium, called out, searing the air and piercing his very soul.

Dexton stepped back, giving Cronan just enough space and time to scamper away.
